The Woman Who Inherited My Father’s Millions Wasn’t a Stranger

The lawyer looked directly at me and finished the sentence.

“Brenna is your father’s daughter.”

I laughed at first because it sounded impossible. I was his only child. At least, that was what I had believed for thirty-eight years.

Then a woman sitting quietly across the room began crying.

Brenna explained that my father had another daughter before he met my mother. He had been eighteen, broke, and terrified. Brenna’s mother moved away before the baby was born, and Dad spent decades trying to find them. He eventually located Brenna only a few years earlier.

What hurt most was learning that he had kept their relationship secret from me.

But the lawyer wasn’t finished.

Dad had not simply handed Brenna everything. The estate was placed in a trust, and Brenna could receive half only if she personally told me the truth and gave me a sealed letter Dad had written.

In it, he apologized for hiding her existence. He said Brenna had grown up struggling while I had received his time, home, and financial support. Leaving her money was his attempt to correct something he could never repair.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

The remaining half of the estate belonged to me.

Dad had deliberately made us sit in the same room because his final wish was not to choose one daughter over the other.

It was to make sure we finally knew we had each other.
