The Ultrasound Revealed Two Babies—and Derek’s Mistake

The doctor pointed toward the screen.

“There are two heartbeats,” she said. “You’re carrying twins.”

My mother gripped my hand while I stared at two tiny shapes moving beneath the flickering light. Then the doctor reviewed my dates and asked whether Derek had completed his post-vasectomy semen tests.

He had not.

A vasectomy does not become effective immediately. Remaining sperm can persist for weeks or months, and doctors require follow-up testing before confirming sterility. Derek had ignored those instructions and blamed me for the predictable consequence.

I sent him the medical explanation.

He replied that twins proved nothing.

So I stopped trying to convince him.

Months later, I delivered two healthy boys. A court-ordered paternity test established that Derek was their biological father. The result arrived while he was still living with Priscilla, who had apparently believed his claim that he could never father another child.

She left him shortly afterward.

Derek asked to return, insisting panic had caused him to make mistakes.

“You didn’t panic,” I told him. “You found an excuse to abandon me and ran directly to someone who was already waiting.”

The court arranged child support and a gradual visitation plan, but our marriage was over.

Derek believed his surgery proved I had betrayed him.

The ultrasound revealed twins.

The laboratory result revealed the only betrayal had been his.
