The idea that everyone suddenly begins to “smell old” at one particular age is misleading. However, natural body odor can gradually change as the skin ages.
Researchers have linked part of this change to a compound called 2-nonenal. It forms when fatty substances on the skin oxidize and has been described as having a grassy or slightly greasy scent. One study detected increasing amounts among participants aged 40 and older, but this does not mean everyone develops a noticeable odor at 40. Genetics, hygiene, diet, medication, health and lifestyle all influence how someone smells.
Aging skin may produce and retain oils differently, while changes in mobility can make bathing, laundering clothes or reaching certain areas more difficult. Menopause, increased sweating, some medications and conditions affecting the liver, kidneys or blood sugar may also alter body odor.
Ordinary care usually helps: wash gently, dry skin folds thoroughly, change clothing regularly and keep bedding fresh. Strong scrubbing or excessive hot showers are not necessarily better because they can irritate older, drier skin.
A sudden, strong or unfamiliar odor should not automatically be blamed on age. It may come from an infection, dental problem, medication or another health issue, particularly when accompanied by sweating, discharge, sores, fever or unexplained symptoms.
There is no shameful age at which people begin to “smell old.” Body scent simply changes throughout life, and persistent changes deserve kindness rather than embarrassment.
