The Badge Exposed His Fake Diagnosis

Beside the invoice, I placed my retired automotive-inspector identification badge.

For twenty-eight years, before factory work and motherhood consumed most of my time, I had inspected engines, reviewed repair claims, and testified in fraud cases for the state. I had never mentioned it because honest mechanics did not need to know.

Trevor did.

I asked him to show me the diagnostic report, compression readings, oil analysis, and photographs proving catastrophic engine failure.

He had none.

The car had not even been connected to the shop’s scanner.

The owner emerged from the back office after hearing Trevor plead with me. I explained that the sputtering likely came from a failing fuel-pressure sensor and requested that nobody touch the vehicle until an independent inspector arrived.

The inspection confirmed my suspicion.

The actual repair cost was $286.

Security footage later showed Trevor preparing inflated estimates for several older customers while performing little or no diagnostic work. The owner terminated him and refunded two previous clients after reviewing their files.

I declined his offer of free repairs and took my car elsewhere.

Before leaving, I picked up the fraudulent invoice and handed him a copy.

“You saw an elderly woman and assumed I would not understand what was beneath the hood,” I said.

Trevor had tried to sell me an $8,000 engine.

Instead, one small badge forced him to explain every lie printed on the page.
