The elevator doors opened, and my sister stepped out wearing my husband’s beach shirt.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Daniel appeared behind her carrying two cocktails. His parents were waiting near the lobby bar, staring at me with the guilty expressions of people who had known the truth long before I did.
The “family vacation” was not about spending time with his parents.
It was a carefully arranged trip allowing Daniel and my sister to appear together without worrying that someone from home would recognise them. His parents had agreed to provide the cover story.
My sister began crying and claimed their relationship had started only recently.
Daniel called my arrival irrational.
I did not argue with either of them.
I photographed the hotel bookings, saved their messages, and recorded the admission Daniel made while demanding that I return home before causing a scene. Then I handed him the envelope my attorney had prepared electronically during my flight.
It contained notice that our joint accounts had been frozen against unusual withdrawals and that divorce proceedings were beginning.
The hotel suite, flights, and expensive dinners had all been charged to our shared business account.
Daniel’s parents suddenly stopped defending him when they realised the transactions would be reviewed.
I had travelled to Orlando hoping to understand why my husband excluded me.
By the time I left the hotel, I understood perfectly.
He had not forgotten that I was family.
He had simply chosen a new one behind my back.
