That Morning I Saw Something Moving Inside the Wall — What I Found Changed Fear into Unexpected Calm

That morning something felt wrong before I could explain it. I walked onto the veranda and noticed the wall was not still. It was moving—not cracking or shaking, but shifting in a slow, unsettling way, as if something alive were trapped inside. Fear rose quickly. My mind jumped to the worst possibility and my body wanted to step back, yet I stayed frozen, watching a small shape struggle within a narrow crack.

Step by step I forced myself closer. What I saw was not smooth or silent. It was frantic, awkward, almost desperate. Then the truth became clear. It was not a snake. It was a skink—a small lizard whose tiny legs scrambled as it tried to free itself from the tight space. In that moment the fear began to fade. What had seemed terrifying now looked helpless. The creature was not dangerous; it was simply trapped and exhausted.

Carefully, with hands that still trembled, I reached in and gently pulled it free. For a second the skink stayed still, as if catching its breath. Then, in an instant, it darted away across the veranda and disappeared, leaving nothing behind but silence. Later I learned that skinks are harmless and shy by nature. The fear I had felt had not come from the animal itself, but from my own imagination filling the unknown with danger.

Helping it free changed something in me. What began as alarm turned into understanding, and with understanding came a quiet calm I had not expected. Sometimes the things that startle us most are only asking for a little space and a careful hand. Once the unknown becomes known, the fear loses its hold and leaves room for something gentler in its place.
