The Strange Little Hook People Once Used Every Single Day

At first glance, this small metal tool can look confusing, almost like something from an old medical kit or a forgotten sewing box. But it is actually a very practical antique item known as a buttonhook. These tools were once common in homes, especially during the late 1800s and early 1900s, when clothing and shoes often had tiny, tightly spaced buttons.

The hooked end was designed to slip through a buttonhole, catch the button, and pull it neatly into place. This made it much easier to fasten high-button shoes, gloves, corsets, collars, and dresses without struggling with your fingers. Some buttonhooks were plain and simple, while others had decorative handles made from silver, bone, wood, or ornate metal, turning an everyday object into something elegant.

Before zippers and modern snaps became popular, buttonhooks were genuinely useful. Many people kept one on a dressing table, in a sewing kit, or near their shoes. Today, they are mostly found in antique shops, flea markets, or old family drawers.

So while it may look mysterious now, this little hook was once part of daily life — a simple tool that saved time, protected delicate fabric, and helped people get dressed properly.
