Customer Schedules Exposed a Quiet Plan to Steal the Company’s Best Accounts

Tom immediately changed every office access code and called our largest commercial clients before the crews even left the yard. We spent the morning checking customer files, service contracts, and scheduling records. Nothing appeared to be missing. Every folder was accounted for, and no contracts had been removed from the office.

The fertilizer supplier’s driver admitted entering the scheduling office but insisted he believed he was helping with a routine account verification requested by the regional manager. He said he had been told the customer schedule needed to be reviewed before Hannah’s ownership information could be updated in the supplier’s system. He photographed only the pages he was instructed to capture and handed the envelope over without asking any questions.

Investigators later discovered the envelope contained copies of the company’s most profitable commercial maintenance contracts, including shopping centers, apartment complexes, and office parks. Alongside them were draft proposals offering the same services at slightly lower prices through a competing landscaping company. The plan was simple: approach our biggest customers within days of the ownership transfer, hoping they would assume the business was changing direction and sign with someone else.

The scheme failed because of one habit Tom had never given up. Every Friday afternoon, he printed the following month’s work schedule and kept a copy in a locked filing cabinet. When he compared those schedules with the photographed documents, he noticed that one page had been rearranged to make it appear several contracts were about to expire when they actually had years remaining.

That small inconsistency exposed the entire plan before a single customer received a competing offer. The copied records were recovered, the account manager was dismissed, and Hannah officially began her first week as owner with every client still exactly where my family had worked decades to earn.
