At the time, medical schools desperately needed cadavers for anatomy lessons, but there weren&#8217;t enough legal sources. As a result, criminals secretly dug up fresh graves and sold the bodies to medical institutions.<\/p>\n<p>To stop grave robbers, families installed these heavy iron cages over graves. Some weighed hundreds of pounds and remained in place for several weeks or months until the body had decomposed enough that it was no longer valuable to thieves. In some communities, guards even patrolled cemeteries at night to keep watch.<\/p>\n<p>The practice gradually disappeared after laws, such as Britain&#8217;s Anatomy Act of 1832, expanded the legal supply of bodies for medical research, reducing the demand for stolen corpses.<\/p>\n<p>Today, these unusual iron cages remain in a handful of historic cemeteries as reminders of a remarkable period in history.
