At exactly 9:45, the ballroom doors opened and Harborview’s general manager, Charles Bennett, entered carrying the leather folder we had arranged.

He walked to the microphone and asked, “Would the owner of Sutton Linens & Laundry please come forward?” Joanne’s smile disappeared. Inside was Harborview’s new five-year commercial laundry contract, worth more than the entire reunion committee would spend in decades. Charles needed my signature before the evening ended. Joanne had spent forty-five years believing working with fabric made someone lesser. She never understood what my mother already knew: there is dignity in useful things—and enormous value in people others are foolish enough to underestimate.

I tied the apron around my waist and spent the next ninety minutes carrying plates, refilling water, and clearing Joanne’s table.
