Mercer had been injured during a night-deck emergency when equipment shifted without warning. I had helped pull him clear and stayed with him until medical arrived. I had never considered it heroic. It had been my job. Jenna stopped smiling. Preston looked horrified, not at me, but at Kayla. My sister tried to say she had only been joking, but Walter interrupted her. “A joke is funny when everyone is laughing. You knew she asked you not to use that name.” Then Preston quietly told Kayla she owed me an apology before the rehearsal dinner continued.

Kayla finally said she was sorry, though her voice barely carried across the table. I told him I was simply part of a team. He smiled. “That’s exactly what Aaron said you would say.” For most of my life, my family had treated silence as weakness. That night, Kayla discovered something people in the Navy already knew: quiet water can still carry enormous force.

Kayla blinked at him. “For what?” Walter’s jaw tightened.
