The account numbers led back to an old savings account I had opened years earlier when Mom helped me manage money after college. I had forgotten she was still listed as an authorized signer. Over the previous year, nearly $5,000 had been withdrawn from that account and sent to Lauren with my name written in the payment notes.

When I confronted Mom, she admitted everything. Wesley had fallen behind before, and she was terrified Lauren would take him back to court. Instead of using her own money, Mom decided that because I had “more than enough,” taking from my savings was basically the same as me helping voluntarily. Wesley claimed he thought I had agreed to it. I did not believe him.

I immediately closed the old account, moved the remaining balance, changed every password, and removed every family member who still had access anywhere. I also sent Lauren copies of the records so she would know the earlier payments had not actually come from me. Nine days later, Wesley walked into court still owing thousands and without the rescue money he had expected.

The judge did not care about his excuses or who Wesley believed should help him. He was ordered to deal with the arrears himself. Within two months, the truck was gone, replaced by something cheaper, and a payment plan had been established. Mom barely spoke to me for weeks because she said I had embarrassed the family. I reminded her that I had not created the problem—I had simply stopped financing the cover-up. Wesley came to my door demanding that I accept responsibility for his children. In the end, the only responsibility I finally accepted was protecting my own money.

The next morning, I took the transfer receipts to my bank.
