Yesterday was supposed to be one of the happiest days of my life.<\/p>\n
It was our three-year anniversary, and my boyfriend insisted on planning everything. He surprised me by booking a table at a restaurant far nicer than anywhere we’d ever been together.<\/p>\n
“Make sure you dress up,” he said with a grin. “I have a special surprise.”<\/p>\n
Those words sent my imagination into overdrive.<\/p>\n
I got my nails done, spent extra time picking out the perfect outfit, and even wondered if this might finally be the night he’d propose.<\/p>\n
Dinner, however, felt… strange.<\/p>\n
He barely touched his food. He kept checking his phone every few minutes and seemed distracted whenever I tried to start a conversation. I figured he was just nervous about whatever surprise he had planned.<\/p>\n
Then dessert arrived.<\/p>\n
The server carefully placed a slice of chocolate cake in front of me with a message written in icing.<\/p>\n
I smiled…<\/p>\n
Until I actually read it.<\/p>\n
“Congrats on becoming my roommate!”<\/p>\n
I stared at the cake in disbelief.<\/p>\n
That was the “special surprise.”<\/p>\n
Not an engagement. Not a heartfelt anniversary message. Just a joke announcing that he finally wanted me to move into his apartment after three years together.<\/p>\n
He laughed awkwardly and said he’d thought it would be “a funny way” to ask.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, I realized I’d spent the entire evening believing we were about to take one huge step forward, only to discover we weren’t even on the same page about where our relationship was heading.<\/p>\n
I quietly stood up, placed enough cash on the table to cover my meal, wished him the best, and walked out before he could stop me.<\/p>\n
Some people later told me I overreacted.<\/p>\n
Maybe they were right.<\/p>\n
But anniversaries aren’t just about expensive dinners\u2014they’re about understanding each other’s hopes, expectations, and future.
