Detectives asked for access to Desmond’s messages, financial records, and recent communications with my attorney. He knew the house was paid off, knew I had savings, and had even contacted an estate agent about its approximate value without telling me.

Marguerite came to my house two days later with the children. She looked exhausted and ashamed, though none of this had been her fault. She handed me a folder containing copies of messages Desmond had sent about my finances. In several of them, he complained that I was “living too long” and said the family would be better off once the house became his. Every document was reviewed, my emergency contacts were changed, and my estate plan was rewritten so Desmond could never benefit from anything connected to me. A trust was created for Rowan and his sister instead, protected until they were older. Marguerite agreed that whatever happened between the adults, the children should never carry their father’s choices.

Months later, I celebrated my seventy-third birthday quietly at home. Rowan brought me a lopsided chocolate cake he had helped decorate himself. For a moment, I hesitated before taking the first bite. Then I looked around the table at my grandchildren and realized fear had already taken enough from us. Desmond had tried to turn a birthday gift into something terrible. I refused to let that become the memory that defined every birthday afterward. What remained of my family deserved something better than his greed.

The investigation did not end with the chocolates.
