Tomás showed me the screenshots. They looked convincing until I noticed the date. According to them, I had invited Margot two weeks earlier while I had been flying overnight with my phone in airplane mode. I opened our actual conversation. The messages simply did not exist.

Margot’s face changed when I asked her to unlock her phone and show me the original thread. Suddenly, she claimed she had deleted it by accident. Darren looked genuinely confused. He had apparently believed I invited them and had even paid for nonrefundable flights based on those screenshots. When he asked where she got them, Margot finally admitted she had created them using a fake-message generator because she thought I would “get over it” once they arrived.

I did not let them inside. Tomás helped them call a nearby hotel while Darren quietly apologized to me. Margot cried, accused me of humiliating her, and reminded me that the children had expected a vacation. I reminded her that her children were not responsible for her decision to fabricate an invitation. She had crossed an entirely different boundary now.

The following morning, I posted one short response beneath her earlier public complaint. I included screenshots of my real conversation and said only that nobody had ever been invited to use the villa. Then I stopped defending myself. Within hours, Margot deleted her post. Darren later sent another apology and reimbursed Tomás for the extra time he had spent dealing with them. My sister did not speak to me for months. Strangely, the silence felt familiar—but this time, it was not because my family had decided I was too boring to include. It was because I had finally made it impossible for them to treat my boundaries like suggestions.

By the time I reached the gate, Margot was standing beside Darren with four suitcases and the confidence of someone who believed persistence would eventually become permission.
