The night Mom died, he hadn’t been riding aimlessly. She had sent him home. Her doctors had already told her there was nothing more they could do, and she made Dad promise not to let us children watch her final hours. She wanted us to remember her laughing in the kitchen, not surrounded by machines. Dad refused at first, but Mom insisted he leave and bring back the two motorcycle helmets they had worn on their first trip together.

He rode home, found the helmets in the garage, and sat on the floor crying for nearly an hour before returning. By the time he reached the hospital, Mom was gone. Dad never explained because his last promise to her had been simple: let the children blame circumstances, doctors, even him if necessary, but never tell them she had chosen to say goodbye without them.

Then he handed me one helmet. Inside the lining was an old folded note in Mom’s handwriting. Dad had kept it hidden for seventeen years. She wrote that she loved us, that Dad had stayed beside her through every frightening moment, and that sending him away had been her decision. I read it twice while Dad watched me with completely clear eyes.

For almost an hour, we talked like we hadn’t talked in years. Then the fog slowly returned. Dad looked around the lobby and asked whether Mom was ready to leave. I swallowed hard, picked up both helmets, and told him we should head home. I never got another completely lucid conversation with my father. But I finally stopped carrying seventeen years of anger toward a man who had actually been keeping the last promise my mother ever asked him to make.

Dad looked toward the elevators and finished the sentence.
