When Marlowe became pregnant, her doctor had recommended gathering family medical histories from both sides. Theo contacted Garrett because he knew almost nothing about his father’s family. That was when Garrett finally told him the truth: he had been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer months earlier, and doctors were uncertain how much time he had left. Theo had secretly been visiting him ever since.

But that wasn’t why Theo excluded me. Garrett had convinced him that seeing us together would reopen everything that happened after our divorce. Theo thought he was protecting me. Before he could explain, I told him Marlowe had shown me the records. His eyes immediately filled with tears. He apologized and said he hadn’t known how to choose between us. I hugged him and told him something he should never have needed to hear: loving his father did not betray me.

When we returned inside, I sat across from Garrett for the first time in years. We didn’t repair the past over dinner. Some wounds don’t disappear because circumstances become sad. But when Theo announced that Marlowe was pregnant, all four of us cried. That evening taught my son something graduation never could: growing up sometimes means realizing you don’t have to protect everyone by carrying impossible choices alone. And it taught me that being invited back mattered less than making sure Theo never again believed he had to choose which parent was allowed to love him.

The pages were medical records.
