Paxton is facing Democrat James Talarico in November. The Texas Tribune

TLR, meanwhile, has a documented history of opposing Paxton in Republican primaries. The Texas Tribune reported that the organization gave former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman about $3 million during her unsuccessful 2022 primary challenge against Paxton. Paxton supporters later accused TLR of helping engineer his 2023 impeachment, an allegation the organization’s founders have denied. The Texas Tribune
...READ MORE

The group’s broader political giving has also become part of the dispute. A recent Daily Signal analysis of Texas campaign-finance records reported that TLR has contributed more than $6.3 million to 144 Democratic candidates and committees since 2000, including $2,500 to Jasmine Crockett’s 2020 Texas House campaign. The same analysis described TLR as the eighth-largest Texas donor to Democrats over that period. The Daily Signal

TLR describes itself as bipartisan and says its political activity is centered on electing officials who support its civil-justice and lawsuit-reform priorities. Historically, however, the organization has been a major force in Republican politics and played an important role in advancing Texas’ business-oriented tort reforms. The Texas Tribune

Its current leadership has also called for Republican unity. TLR CEO Ryan Patrick said in August that intraparty disagreements were minor compared with the policy differences between Republicans and Democrats, even as the organization remained deeply at odds with Paxton’s wing of the Texas GOP. KRDO

The dispute therefore reflects a broader struggle inside Texas Republican politics between traditional business-oriented organizations such as TLR and the populist coalition surrounding Paxton. What remains less clear is whether TLR will ultimately spend directly in the Senate general election before voters choose between Paxton and Talarico in November.

Texans for Lawsuit Reform, one of the most influential business-backed political organizations in Texas, is drawing renewed attention over its long-running conflict with Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton as national GOP groups spend heavily to keep the seat in Republican hands.
