She whispered, \u201cI thought you wanted her more now.\u201d I watched the color disappear from his face.<\/p>\n<p>Desmond called the photographer back before the reception ended. He asked for new family pictures with Wren standing beside him, then requested one photograph of just father and daughter. Coralie protested that I had deliberately embarrassed her, but Desmond finally said what Wren needed him to say: \u201cYou embarrassed yourself when you competed with a five-year-old.\u201d He made it clear that marrying him never gave anyone permission to diminish Rosalind\u2019s child.<\/p>\n<p>The marriage did not magically become perfect that night.
