What Desmond\u2019s family had never bothered to ask was who had actually arranged most of the trip. The beach house itself was already paid through checkout, so I left that alone. Then I removed my card from any remaining incidentals and sent Desmond one message: \u201cYour family can continue enjoying the house. Everything else is now yours to organize.\u201d By breakfast the next morning, Marguerite discovered the catered brunch was not coming. Desmond\u2019s father learned the fishing boat had been canceled. Colette found out there was no prepaid transportation waiting for their shopping trip.<\/p>\n<p>That was when the calls started. Marguerite accused me of ruining her husband\u2019s birthday. Colette demanded I restore the reservations because guests were expecting them. Desmond finally came to my hotel alone. He looked exhausted. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize you paid for all of this,\u201d he admitted. I stared at him. \u201cThat\u2019s the problem.
