Then I called the airline and changed only our return flights. I wasn\u2019t trying to strand him. Grant still had his rental car, his original flight, and three adult friends nearby. We hiked an easy trail, ate pancakes for dinner, swam until sunset, and took ridiculous photographs in matching cowboy hats. Nobody waited for Grant to finish golfing. Nobody scheduled around what he needed. On the second night, Callum asked, \u201cMom, why is vacation easier when Dad isn\u2019t here?\u201d That question hurt because I already knew the answer.<\/p>\n<p>Grant discovered everything when he returned to the original hotel and found our room empty. He called furious at first, demanding our location. Then he noticed the family group chat full of photographs\u2014his children laughing through the vacation he had chosen to miss. His anger disappeared. \u201cNadia,\u201d he said, voice breaking, \u201cplease tell me you\u2019re not leaving me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t decided that,\u201d I answered. \u201cBut I\u2019ve decided I\u2019m done being married like a single parent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant started crying. He admitted he had assumed I would always handle the children because I was \u201cbetter at it.\u201d He had never considered what that assumption cost me.<\/p>\n<p>When we returned home, I did not accept another quick apology.
