The excavation was immediately halted because my tenants had dug far deeper than allowed without permits or utility clearance. Once professionals exposed the object safely, they discovered an old steel safe, badly rusted but still locked. Records eventually connected it to the man who had owned the property decades before I bought it. Inside were old coins, family documents, photographs, and several pieces of jewelry. Nothing made me suddenly rich, and the contents had to go through the proper process to determine whether surviving relatives had a claim.<\/p>\n<p>My tenants, meanwhile, had a much simpler problem.<\/p>\n<p>Their lease prohibited structural alterations, and the city ordered the unauthorized excavation secured and properly restored.
