Apparently, I wasn\u2019t the only person they had borrowed money from. Over the years, they had repeated the same story with several relatives and friends\u2014urgent bills, promises to repay quickly, then excuses whenever anyone asked for their money back. This time, though, one lender had insisted on everything in writing.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit exposed bank records showing that much of the money they borrowed hadn\u2019t gone toward saving their home at all. There were expensive trips, renovations, and purchases made during the same period they were telling everyone they were barely surviving. I still didn\u2019t have a signed agreement, but I had years of messages where they thanked me for the loan and promised repayment.<\/p>\n<p>Those messages were enough for my attorney to take the matter seriously.<\/p>\n<p>I never enjoyed watching their situation fall apart. But I finally understood something important: trusting family doesn\u2019t mean ignoring your own protection.
