I had spent Wednesday sorting them, labeling each variety, and taking photographs beside the security footage from my kitchen camera. On top of the crate I placed one envelope: a written notice telling her she no longer had permission to enter my property for any reason. Then I went home. By eight that morning, she had discovered the second part. I had already filed a police report for trespassing and property damage and contacted a local nursery to document what could be saved and what would need replacing.

My phone rang at 8:17. Brenda was furious. “You did all this over some stupid flowers?!” she shouted. I told her they were not stupid to me, but that actually did not matter. They could have been weeds. She had crossed onto property she did not own in the middle of the night and destroyed something because she disliked how it looked from her house.

Fortunately, many of Mom’s perennials survived because the roots remained intact. Others had to be replaced, and Brenda eventually reimbursed the documented damage rather than fight the claim.

By late summer, color had returned along my fence.

Brenda’s house remained perfectly beige.

And from then on, she enjoyed her minimalist aesthetic from her own side of the property line.

What I carried across the road was a wooden crate containing every stem Brenda had cut from my garden.
