Dad straightened his shoulders.<\/p>\n
“Can I help you?”<\/p>\n
The man opened the folder.<\/p>\n
“My name is Michael Carter. I represent the new owners of this property.”<\/p>\n
Dad laughed.<\/p>\n
“New owners? This is my daughter’s house.”<\/p>\n
“It was,” Michael replied. “The sale closed three days ago.”<\/p>\n
Mom’s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n
“What sale?”<\/p>\n
The deputy handed Dad a packet.<\/p>\n
“You’re being formally notified that this property has changed ownership. You no longer have permission to enter.”<\/p>\n
Dad looked from the paperwork to the front door as if it might suddenly prove everyone wrong.<\/p>\n
“This has to be illegal!”<\/p>\n
Michael calmly shook his head.<\/p>\n
“The deed transferred legally. Your daughter was the sole owner. She had every right to sell.”<\/p>\n
Mom pulled out her phone and called me.<\/p>\n

“Skyler!” she cried. “Tell them this is a misunderstanding.”<\/p>\n
“It isn’t.”<\/p>\n
Dad grabbed the phone.<\/p>\n
“You sold our house?”<\/p>\n
“No,” I said quietly. “I sold my house.”<\/p>\n
There was a long silence.<\/p>\n
“What about all our things?”<\/p>\n
“They’ve been packed, inventoried, and placed in a climate-controlled storage unit. The company prepaid three months. After that, it’s your responsibility.”<\/p>\n
His voice hardened.<\/p>\n
“You betrayed your own parents.”<\/p>\n
I couldn’t help smiling.<\/p>\n
“No, Dad. I listened when you forgot to hang up.”<\/p>\n
Silence.<\/p>\n
Then I played five seconds of the recording through the phone.<\/p>\n
“She’s dumb enough to let us stay.”<\/p>\n
He never spoke another word.<\/p>\n
The deputy gestured toward the waiting taxi.<\/p>\n
“I’m afraid you’ll need to leave the property.”<\/p>\n
As they loaded their suitcases back into the trunk, I looked around my new apartment.<\/p>\n
