A bucket filled with unusual metal pieces in an old attic may look like forgotten plumbing parts or obsolete hardware. In reality, these objects are maple sap taps, commonly known as spiles.<\/p>\n
Each spile was inserted into a small hole drilled into a mature maple tree during late winter or early spring. As temperatures moved below freezing at night and above freezing during the day, pressure changes inside the tree caused sap to flow. The spile acted like a tiny faucet, directing that sap into a hanging bucket.<\/p>\n
Fresh maple sap is thin, clear, and only mildly sweet. It must be boiled for hours to remove most of its water and create concentrated maple syrup. Approximately 40 liters of sap may be needed to produce just one liter of finished syrup.<\/p>\n
Finding dozens of spiles together suggests that a former resident probably made maple syrup, either as a family tradition, seasonal business, or personal hobby. After each tapping season, the reusable metal pieces would be cleaned and stored until the following year.<\/p>\n
