It is especially associated with Pennsylvania German, often called Pennsylvania Dutch, decorative traditions, although similar stars now appear on barns and homes throughout North America.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, farmers painted geometric stars, rosettes and circular designs on barns once exterior paint became more affordable during the 1800s. Many were simply decorative expressions of regional identity and craftsmanship. The designs later became widely known as \u201chex signs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over time, people began attaching symbolic meanings to them. Depending on the family or community, a barn star may represent good fortune, protection, hospitality, prosperity or pride in the farm. Different colours are also sometimes assigned meanings, but there is no universal system that applies to every star.<\/p>\n<p>Despite popular legends, seeing one does not automatically mean the barn belongs to the Amish, marks a secret society or carries magical power. In fact, traditional Amish communities generally do not use decorative hex signs.<\/p>\n<p>Today, many metal barn stars are sold simply as rustic decorations.
