The childcare assistance office confirmed what I already feared. Megan and Trevor had been receiving monthly payments by claiming I was a paid caregiver. On paper, I was supposedly earning $1,450 a month. In reality, I was watching Noah for free, buying his food, covering school costs, and being hidden from anyone who might ask too many questions.

Megan cried when the investigation started, but most of her tears were for herself. Trevor insisted it was “just paperwork” and said the money helped keep the family stable. I told him stability built on a lie always collapses. My attorney made sure my name was removed from every form, and I gave the school written proof that I was Noah’s grandmother, not a hired babysitter.

For two weeks, Megan refused to speak to me. Then the payments stopped, and suddenly she wanted to talk. She said she was overwhelmed. She said Trevor handled most of the forms. She said she never meant to make me feel erased. I told her being erased was exactly what happened when Noah was taught to call me Mrs. Carter.

I still see my grandson, but now everything is in writing. No more quiet arrangements. No more hidden help. When Noah runs into my arms and calls me Grandma, I answer proudly. That is the one title they never had the right to take from me.
