The folder Ryan took from my locked cabinet contained the original property documents, my husband’s insurance papers, and a copy of the trust he had created before he died. At first, I could not understand why Ryan would want any of it. Then my attorney found the answer. Nicole and Ryan had been trying to prove they had “established residence” on my property so they could delay being removed and pressure me into giving them a formal lease. The rental listing was only part of it. They had used the guest house address for mail, opened a small business account under “Maple Cottage Stays,” and even listed Ryan as a property manager on one form.

When Nicole came to my front door that evening, she was not crying anymore. She was angry. She said I was selfish, old-fashioned, and standing in the way of her fresh start. I listened until she said the guest house was “basically hers” because she had made it profitable. That was when I handed her copies of the security footage, the rental screenshots, and the police report for the missing trunk and documents. Her face changed immediately. Ryan disappeared before sunset, but the sheriff found him two days later trying to sell my husband’s watch online.

Nicole moved out within a week. I did not shout. I did not beg. I simply stopped confusing love with access. The guest house is locked now, the documents are secured, and the lavender still grows outside the windows. Sometimes I miss the daughter I thought I was helping, but I do not miss the woman who looked at my memories and saw a business opportunity.
