At first glance, it seems too small to serve as a regular shelf, too low to be a countertop extension, and too oddly placed to have an obvious function. Unsurprisingly, photos of this mysterious feature have sparked countless debates online.

Social media users offered all kinds of creative theories. In some homes, they’re also used as a temporary resting place for hot dishes, serving platters, or even as a footrest while sitting nearby.

Like many custom home features, its exact purpose ultimately depends on the homeowner or designer who included it. While it may seem unusual at first, these compact shelves can become surprisingly useful once you start incorporating them into everyday life.

Sometimes the most confusing design choices turn out to be simple conveniences hiding in plain sight.

Moving into a new home often comes with unexpected discoveries, but few are as puzzling as finding a small wooden shelf sticking out from the side of a kitchen island.
