There was an elderly woman in my neighborhood whom almost everyone seemed to avoid. She was often sitting on the same bench, coughing, asking passersby if they had a little spare change for medicine or a bite to eat. Most people hurried past without making eye contact, afraid she might be contagious or simply unsure how to help. I never had much to give, but whenever I could, I’d bring her a sandwich, a warm meal, or a few dollars. She always thanked me with a smile and insisted she’d never forget my kindness.<\/p>\n
A few months later, I noticed she hadn’t been outside for several days. Eventually, I learned that she had passed away. It was sad to hear, but life moved on until I received an unexpected phone call from someone claiming to be a distant relative. They explained that while going through her belongings, they had found my name written on a piece of paper and asked if I would come by her apartment.<\/p>\n
Assuming they simply needed help identifying a few things, I agreed.<\/p>\n

On one wall were dozens of photographs. Some were old family pictures, but many were of neighbors\u2014including me.
